How to Repair XBox 360 - Troubleshooting

If you have not already done so, Download and run this Troubleshooting Utility that will guide you through the most basic causes of the 3 Red Light Error.

This may seem Obvious, but a simple RESET resolves the problem in over 30% of the cases:  

1. Remove any disks and turn OFF the console. 

2. Turn the console back ON. 

3. While the console is starting, Press and hold the Y Button and then pull the Trigger at the same time.

4. If the 3 red light error is still there, continue to the next step:


Connector Integrity: 

1. Turn OFF the console. 

2. Unplug all wires connecting to the console, until it's just a bare box. 

3. Make sure all the plug-in connectors (sockets) on the box are clean and intact. 

4. Plug each wire back into it's respective socket and make sure it's tight. 

5. Turn On the console.

6. If the 3 red light error is still there, continue to the next step:


Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and Memory Unit (MU) Integrity: 

1. Turn OFF the console. 

2. Remove the HDD and MU (if present). 

3. Look closely at the connectors and make sure all the pins are clean and intact. 

4. All of the connecting pins should be in line with each other. 

5. Re-install the HDD and MU. 

6. Turn On the console.

7. If the 3 red light error is still there, continue to the next step:


Power Supply: 

1. Make sure the console is ON. 

2. Observe the color of the LED on the power supply. 

3. If the LED is Green or Red, click the Continue button below. 

4. If the LED is Orange, make sure the power supply cord is plugged into the console. 

5. The LED should return to Green. 

6. Turn Off the console, and then turn it On again.

7. If the 3 red light error is still there, continue to the next step:


Overheating: 

This is typically the most common cause of the 3 red light error. 

1. Turn the console Off. 

2. Vacuum all openings on all sides of the console - Do not blow air into them. 

3. Relocate the console away from any sources of heat, including sunlight. 

4. Stand the console on it's end vertically, on a hard, smooth, level surface. 

5. Make sure there are no obstacles blocking any openings to the console. 

6. After the console has been turned off for at least 1 hour, turn it back On again.
